Anyone live in a semi detached

Hi, we are looking at a semi detached built in 1970's. We live in 100 year old terrace at present, so walls are thick and we rarely hear the neighbours.

Does anyone live in a modern-ish semi? Is the noise really bad? Do you like living in a semi.

We live in a modern semi, we don't hear much from next door (can't hear music or tv), i think it depends what rooms are the other side of the joining wall.

Most of the houses we have lived in have been semis. There wasnt much of a problem with noise in our late 60s semi. The thing I notice is that we tend to interact with the non-attached side rather than the attached side. I suppose that is because that is the side where the car is and we go to and from the back.

I like 60's and 70's houses. The rooms tend to be larger than 80's houses and the windows were huge so let lots of light in. Our 1980s house was built out of spit and tissue paper and therefore had crap sound insulation. It also had tiny windows.

I currently live in a 1975 semi. If I'm honest I nearly had a heart attack the first night when someone coughed right behind me! Our sofas are clearly back to back!

If our tv is off I can hear their conversations. If I can hear them, then obviously they can hear me. It is a factor to why we put it back on the market (at a loss) after less than 3 years.

My last house was 1990's but never heard a peep from neighbours.

I live in a 70s semi and love it. The rooms are so light and has a bigger garden than newer homes.

As others have said, the noise levels depend on the quality of build, the layout and the neighbours. Our first neighbour was so loud I could hear his radio/TV, but to be fair you could have heard him from the other end of the street.

We don't hear a sound from our current neighbours and they claim to not hear our noise.

We used to live in a semi built around 1980. Our neighbours weren't particularly loud, but you could hear everything, ie when they went up and down the stairs, when the closed kitchen cupboards etc - the walls just weren't very thick and the whole house was quite 'bangy' IYSWIM.

After that we moved to a 1930's semi and it all just seemed much more 'solid' - and you couldn't hear anything from next door.

Personally I would never live in a 'modern' house again but horses for courses....

We used to live in a semi built in the 70s. It was great until some new neighbours moved in whose teenage son was very noisy, eg, loud music and not being bothered who heard him and his girlfriend getting intimate.

As our DCs were very young at the time, it gave us a good reason to move. We now live in a detached bungalow, which although not much bigger in terms of square feet, was worth every penny purely to avoid that problem.

I would definitely not mind living in a Semi again, but I'd like to have a crystal ball with regards to considerate neighbours.
