Does anyone know what to do with a sloping garden?

It's long narrow and has a slope along most of one side. I need to landscape it but also leave enough space for DD toys etc (she is 2). Any advice?

Do you mean it slopes right-to-left as you look down the length of the garden of that it is mainly flat but just that a bit off to the side slopes down?

Our neighbours have just had theirs terraced - deck at the bottom, then a lawn and then a play barked area at the top. Not a cheap option though, as it's taken a few months to complete the work. We also have a sloping garden. We've had a retaining wall put along the bottom of one half (it's a wide garden) - using railway sleepers, so it wasn't too expensive) to make a level area for the DC to play on (if we ever get the grass down, that is...).

There are companies that specialise in landscaping/maintaining sloping gardens. Our other neighbours are about to have theirs done by a company called The Sloping Garden Company. May be worth seeing if there are similar companies in your area?

Our old house had a practically vertical garden and e built lots of interlinked turfed terraces which was a very strong, architectural look. Our neighbours (who were "real" gardeners) built one terrace right outside the back of the house and then sort of went with the slope for the rest of the garden, breaking it up very gently with a couple of low retaining walls and lots of interest in the form of trees, a parterre, great planting and so on. We go back to see them every now and then and, while our garden had wow factor, theirs is really magical and charming but would take a long time to get right.

I was going to suggest terracing but might be a bit dangerous with a 2 yr old - unless a fence was put up?
