Yet another question regarding getting deposit back

from LL. They've agreed after some ahem talks that we're getting it back in full but want letters/final statements from utilities saying we owe nothing.

Well we have paid bills but utility companies being very slow to send final statements out and also seem to think its an odd request.

So is this standard LL practice or are they just holding onto our deposit for as long as possible. It is in the scheme so I know its not in their bank account but would just like the money back.

We moved out on the 14th April.

They are trying it on. Even if you are in arrears with the utilities, they won't chase the landlord, they'll chase you at your new address.

The money should be returned to you ASAP now. Can you hassle the scheme administrator? They should be able to provide you with some advice. The Deposit Protection Scheme has some FAQ's which might be worth reading in case this scenario is covered.

Agree they're trying it on. Have never been asked for this and its none of their business whether you are up to date with your bills or not.

3rd agreement of them trying it on!

When we moved here the previous tenant WAS behind with the electric and the gas, we had the job of meter reading and getting the name changed, LL had nothing to do with it, the previous people were chased.

They're taking the p1ss. I would write a letter giving him/her saying that utility bills are nothing to do with the landlord and are entirely your respondibility. I would give him/her 1 week to return your deposit in full or you'll raise a dispute with the deposit protection scheme.

Thanks all.

I suspected they were being out of order but was hesitant to start making a fuss as they've been so incredibly difficult.

Letter and phone call will be actioned tomorrow.
