I have some kitchen chairs that I painted when I got them with gloss, but they look a bit grubby and I need to recoverthe seat panels now - so

whats the best and easiest and cheap way to paint chairs?

Spray them?

Do I need to prime them first?

I dont like gloss as its thick and doesnt give the finish I want

sand them lightly all over to get rid of the glossy finish so the new paint sticks better.

use a matt paint (can be water or oil based)

you get a great finish using a small (narrow) roller rather than a brush.

Doubt if you need primer, not necessary and makes it more expensive.

well I dont think a roller would work -- lots of little bits on the chair tha the paint wont get into - thats why I was thinking spray paint

With the little bits use a paint brush and dab it gently, then use a roller. Spray painting would probably be more costly if you don't already have the equipment. (But then the finish would probably be better!!!)
