Are there such things as ghosts?

We are renovating our house we have lived in for over 10 years and have pulled up some floors and unblocked some chimneys in the past 2 weeks.

I never thought about ghosts or whether I believe in them, but DS asked who the lady was who was watching him last night and went on to describe her as older than me with neither a kind or a cross face and blue eyes. I didn't ask too much as I didn't want him to think too much about it. It was a very odd question for DS as he is a good sleeper and nothing bothers him.

The next day DH mentioned completely unconnected that he had got up to check the house for the past 2 nights as he was certain he had heard someone outside the room then going up the stairs. Al the DC were fast asleep on both occasions.

To add to it about a week ago despite being a very warm day there were 2 places in the house that were unusually cold - so noticeably I mentioned it to DH.

Do you think we could have a ghost? The property is over 100 years old and I'm sure it's seen it's fair share of comings and goings! I'm not bothered as it doesn't feel bad or scary, but I don't like the thought of us being disturbed at night!

Sorry a very odd question, but interested to hear other peoples experiences and opinions!

The house my parents lived in was decidedly haunted- numerous people saw a lady walk down the stairs, things would go missing (like tv remotes) and reappear in a pile in a random cupboard, we often heard voices or noises and the dogs would occasionally bark wildly/cower in fear at random times and places. It was very spooky. I have heard someone breathing in bed next to me when I was alone! Very glad we moved.

Get a friend with a dog to walk around the house. If the dog is relaxed no worries if the dog doesn't want to go in one particular room are then you have something. I prefer the word presence. You can then apply to mums net for more advice accordingly :o

I read this last night, forgot to post an answer backj and ended up dreaming i had a ghost living with me and it kept melting down our ornaments (i also did have a bit of cheese though before bed time, but still)

Weird though cos at the moment were renovating our very old house, ive lived there since 86 and we bought it of my mum last year, we had to knock all the upstairs walls down as they were seriously crumbling away, it was over xmas so through the cold and snow with no heat and no electrcity which made it worse.

anyway me and my bf were the only 1's there i was knocking down in the bathroom and he was in the hall outside, i suddenly heard aclinking sound and when i looked down a tiny glass bottle with a cork in it had fallen out, when i looked in the wall further i found - wait for it, a lock of hair tied in a ribbon, another glass bottle without cork and a childs story book they had written and drawn pictures themselves about noddy. to say i was terrified is an understatement, but after looking at them, he went downstairs to make a cuppa and i carried on with the demolition bit, i heard him running up the stairs at lightning speed, so i shouted out whats up and didnt get a reply, i heard him again running down the hall and still no reply, so assumed he was playing a game, then i heard him turn on the tap downstairs, there was no way on earth he could of been upstairs running around and downstairs to turn the noisy tap on.... i have never run so fast myself but refused to go back alone in their for ages. before that ive never experienced anything in the house, but i do think ive done something.

since then in december ive been working there a few times, felt nothing then come out and have found scratches on my arms, the most being in the dark i couldnt see anything but just felt an intense burning and when i got home i had 3 deep scratches on my upper arm and 1 on my cheek!! we've only been doing the bathroom the past 2 weeks or so and have put the walls back up, since then i havent felt anything, but still un-nerves me, i definatly think renovation works can dig something up, your obvously changing their house but as someone else mentioned and we were also advised to do is take a dog in and watch its reactions, its a good indicator whether to be worried or not x

IMO, yes, there is such a thing. But I didn't believe there was until I was 29 -years-old and confronted with irrefutable proof that what I had seen was in fact a ghost.

It's possible the rennovations started it off, too.

A friend of mine bought a house in Denver about 20 years ago, to do up and then sell (she's done that a few times). It was an old Edwardian house (there are a surprising number of these and Victorians packed full of features as the city isn't very old). All was fine until she started knocking down walls and such.

She started to see a young man in lumberjack clothes.

One night when her boyfriend was there he heard noise coming from upstairs. As we went to go up, he saw the man himself.

She told him she was making it as nice a place as it was when he was there and he went away.

You can tell it firmly that it's welcome to stay, but it cannot frighten or disturb anyone at night.

It might, however, be a residual haunting, as most are. In which case it's just a playback of energy that was there.

I would say yes too. My parents house is haunted but only seems to be children that set it off. We had lots of activity when I was little and I saw it on the stairs, used to hear footsteps on the stairs and used to see an old woman sat on the end of my bed. I can see her now. My mum and dad have both seen it too and not remotely threatening. Strangely the other day my 2yr old dd asked who was the old lady in her room when she was having a nap!!!

last 2 properties ive lived in ,weve seen weird things going on.
this one ,weve only lived in 2 years and straight away gutted the place
things go missing, smell of smoke just appears in lounge /hall.
someone/something walked straight past my dp in the hall(he was in the kitchen walking towards the hall)he yelled i thought i told you to go to bed thinking it was eldest son,but nope no one there. and he does not believe in ghosts/god or anything.
last house was an old house ,previous owner had lived and died there, then builder tarted it up and we rented it for a few years
god that was a creepy house,dp gets up at 4.30 every morning and he would not look in the bathroom mirror as he felt someone was staring at him,and the footsteps up the stairs...
