Type of paint for front door which gets lots of sun

What sort of paint do I need to get for a wooden front door which gets a lot of sun. We had it painted a couple of years ago with a posh matt exterior paint and it's all peeled off already.

Ours gets a lot of sun too, it's varnished and I've just re-done it after 3 years.

Perhaps once it's painted you could add a topcoat of clear yacht varnish for protection?

Disclaimer - I'm not an expert, B&Q would advise [csmile]

Opaque woodstain, Sadolin or Sikkens- type? I suspect a light colour will fare better than a dark: or should it be the other way round?

e.g. here possibly?

Light better than dark definitely as it reflects the heat rather than absorbs it - or something like that.

Completely off-topic, but I love your nn, OP [cgrin]

You need to buy a paint that is UV stable and use the correct primer for your chosen paint, light colours will reflect the light but this will cause them to crack so a mid to dark colour is normally best, reds are useless as they cannot be UV stable as seen with red cars that turn pink though blues and greens are very good for durablilty.

Why thank you hormones - although I now realise it's Carole not Carol so I'd better go and change it.

Thank you Con. It is currently painted with a mid colour Paint and Paper Library matt shade that was supposed to be suitable for exterior wood. The white around the frame is cracked too so I suppose that means it's not the paint but maybe the preparation which was poor?
