how much should a decorator charge?

im trying to get my house ready to put on the market

most of the decorating i can do myself, but the hall/stairs/landing i cant.

last time we got it decorated the guy kept upping the price bit by bit, and he did an absolutely crap job (he didnt paper into the windows! he just left them!) his quote went from £400 to ending up at £600.

ive asked around friends but the one they all used has just retired! typical!

how much should it cost me? its a small hallway, (very small) then up the stairs (too high for me to reach) and a small landing

5 doors in total and one small window.

what do you reckon?

I had my stairs and landing (top floor flat, so no hall) painted recently. I only wanted one coat of the same colour paint (to cover scuffs) and the gloss work didn't need doing.

It was £140 which I thought was very reasonable.

We were recently quoted £750 to paint hallway, stairs and landing (4-bed semi, reasonable size but not huge), but that did include stripping wallpaper/filling.

bloody hell! so from 140 to 750 is a bit of a difference!

i can strip it (or most of it) myself

i will need it re-papering and possibly painting aswell....thinking of going for a paper that can just be painted...blown vinyl - the walls arent nice enough to paint but am sick of paying for it re papered every few years...painting i reckon would be cheaper for next time.

Just been quoted between £400 and £650 per room (dep on size), thats to strip wallpaper off, lining paper then paint, including woodwork and doors.

If you have a head for heights buy a ladder that will form a trestle on stairs and do it yourself.

My DP is a painter and decorator and he says that for the work you want done including gloss work it should cost between £450 - £500. Any higher and your being ripped off.

HTH

thanks for that, ill bear that in mind then.

i know i got ripped off last time, and wouldnt touch the same decorator with a barge pole

getting a quote from a local guy in the next few days.

5 years ago: had large bedroom stripped and emulsioned and small bathroom tiled £350.00. I think that with any job by tradesmen it is not just price but how long it takes. My guys did it all in a weekend which was very handy as I work all week .

About £500 - 600
