Is there a certain age by which boys and girls cannot share a bedroom?

We live in a 3 bed house.

DS1 and 2 share a room, happily atm

We're expecting boy/girl twins this summer who will share the third bedroom.

None of our rooms are big enough for the 3 boys to share, so I was wondeing when we'll have to move house.

Does anyone know? Or is there no set rule?

Thanks Smile

There is no law, no.

Some councils set a age limit of 10 before they will allow family an additional of an extra room if in social housing

Jaquelinehyde · 15/04/2011 22:02

Didn't it use to be 12 or is that just what the housing offices use to determin the amount of bedrooms you need?

There is no rule, when it comes to your own children in your own house.

Most people seem to think just before puberty is a good cut-off.

We have the middle sized room and had 3 sharing the largest bedroom!

I assumed it would be a guideline/rule linked to social housing rather than private, as I don't see how on earth they'd enforce it.

We're fortunate to own our house so I guess it'll be up to us.

I also recall that when making decisions on whether certain home improvement loans could be included as part of the housing costs on Income Support it was age 10 for extension to make additional sleeping space

Yes, if you own your house it is 100% up to you. There is no law at all.

shuknik · 21/04/2011 09:14

I think it s best when they are 10. They do need their privacy.....even if it s your own house, it s all about kids being comfortable in every way.isn't it?

CameronRocks · 28/04/2011 13:44

It also depends whether you live in Cornwall or Gloucestershire! Wink

We live in maried quarters (DH in the Army) and the magic age for getting a house with enough bedrooms so no child has to share, is when they are all age10 or over. Apparently this is based on social housing guidelines. There is no law for what you have to do in your own home though - how could it be enforced?

narmada · 28/04/2011 21:52

Of course you can do what you like in your own house. It would be complete madness to have a law suggesting otherwise Shock.
