If you were hoping to buy your 1st house soon what would you try and learn at least a basic knowledge of ie what would be most useful to someone with no handy other half or knowledge of local tradesmen etc? Suppose I could get recommendations for electricians etc if needed but I quite fancy being a bit handy with at least something so I don't have to go looking for someone every time I need something done!

General DIY.... how to put up a shelf, fit a cupboard door, replace a tap washer, paint (walls and woodwork). Make sure you have a selection of appropriate tools so a set of good quality screwdrivers, a good power drill and an adjustable spanner.

Simple carpentry so you can lay decking, board out a floor, cut in skirting boards and architrave etc is achievable.

Have a look at what's on in local FE colleges - there might be a handy course for you.
