Dumbass question about tongue and groove

We had a new kitchen fitted recently and DH has added tongue and groove around some of the walls from the counter up to about head height (well, my head height).

I want the top of the tongue and groove to be finished off properly but can't find what I need. Ideally, it would have a little shelf sitting on top of it.

This may be a totally stupid question, but what do I use and how do I fit it? It has quite a few edges so I can't use a standard shelf kit as it will look odd. I need a shelf that just sits on top of the tongue and groove, with no visible support. I've seen what I want in lots of places and online but I'm buggered if I know how to do it. I'll try to find a link to show you what I mean.

I'm desperate to paint tomorrow as, at present, my lovely kitchen looks like a 70s sauna with all the bare pine of the T&G. All help much appreciated.

Step 5 in that link just says to pin and glue a 'covering strip' on top. I imagine its a matter of going to a wood merchant's and seeing if they have anything the right size. In fact, places like that are usually quite helpful; they'd probably advise the best way to go about it.
