Lighting design advice

Need to do something about the lighting in our small gloomy lounge. The room is small, so not much space for floor lamps or lamps on shelving. Any advice on lighting design?

Try and get some lighting into the corners, this will brighten it up.
Sleek metal standard lamps would work even if you have limited room.
