Loft insulation & boarding

Our loft is currently boarded but has very little insulation. We want to get the recommended amount but have read that you can't board on top of it. We don't want to lose the area for storage (or the Scalextric track we have up there!). I have heard somewhere about insulation which comes with boarding on top - can anyone recommend that? Is it very expensive?

We have boarding over our insulation, we had a new roof and the loft insulated and boarded about a month ago... it cost us about £600 I think, for the insulation and boarding (and fitting) not the roof obviously!

Thanks WalterFlipsticks - £600 doesn't seem too bad to retain the use of the loft. So did you have to get a particular kind of insulation to board over? I had a company who quoted, but they said the normal kind of loft insulation they do would be too thick to board over.

Ours was from Wickes, they had an offer on in conjunction with the energy saving trust where you bought one roll and got two free, I don't think it's anything special. Our joiner told us about the offer so we bought that ourselves and he fitted it. We already had a certain amount of insulation so we just laid another layer to bring it up to current standards.
He had to lay cross batons over the joists to protect the electrical wires etc, this gave extra height for the insulation, I'm pretty sure there are no special requirements though as what you are asking them to do is not an unusual request. Boarding the loft, with insulation under the boarding... I'm no expert so could be wrong.

Ah thanks - sounds like it's not too complicated after all :) We are renovating the whole house so getting a bit overwhelmed by all the details at present!

Yeah we have just done the same, only the kitchen to go now... inside... outside is another matter!
It's so worth it though! I LOVE our house! Good luck!

Thanks :) We still need to do the basics such as rewiring, new windows and possibly change the layout / extend at some point as well (waiting for the architect to get back to us). It will take years, but I think it will be worth it. We love our house too - it's great when you finally find the place where you want to be and put all that energy into.
