We have just had an extension and now have a new hall. It's about 1.5m x 5m. Front door at the bottom of the 1.5m width and view from front door is 2 doors on RHS wall (loo & utility room), blank wall on whole LHS and blank wall facing the door. Stairs are out of sight from the front door IYSWIM. Just now it's just white walls and laminate, nothing is in it at all. Other the pram sitting at the wall ATM.

What's in your hall and what should I put in mine?

just coats on the wall. DH put everything else under the stairs this weekend and I LOVE the space. DS uses it to play in Smile

One of those things i never know the name for - it has a seat with a space under and hook down each side and a mirror and umbrella holders each side too.

A bureaux with all our important stuff in.

Big mirror.

Dog beanbag and lots of chews in a bowl.

MmeLindt · 29/03/2011 22:15

We have an antique bench, with lift-up storage chest underneath for all the hats, scarves and gloves.

Cupboard with phone on it with more scarves and lots of junk.

Hooks on wall for coats and jackets.

I have lots of picture frames, a vase of flowers (actually my wedding flowers, they not real but everyone thought they were so must look good. Coats hung up. shoe rack. A unit with baskets which has everyones hats, gloves, scarfs etc in.

mrspink27 · 29/03/2011 22:19

A monks bench, a wicker shoe basket, a leather tub chair, a big lamp, a terracotta bread crock full of wnaky twigs, a wrought iron candle stand, a gothic style mirror (well there will be when DH get's his drill out), some antique Paris photos.
Plus all the usual book bags, school shoes, stuff dumped by the DDs.
Bit of an eclectic mix!

QueenBathsheba · 29/03/2011 22:23

Old chest of drawers for hats, gloves, scraves with a big mirror over and a large vase of flowers on top. Long case clock, a couple of old lancashire spindleback chairs, another mirror, three paintings and an oak coffer with shoes in. Two big baskets full of wellingtons and some coat hooks.

CointreauVersial · 30/03/2011 00:16

Ours is quite long and narrow, so we have absolutely nothing in it. Pictures and a mirror on the walls, and that's it.

The DCs bedrooms all lead off it, so their coats, shoes and clobber go straight into their bedrooms.

I'm contemplating putting up some hooks for visitor's coats, though.

Front hall has about 20 plus coats plus 2 baskets shoes plus shoe racks and 3 cardboard boxes with holes cut out of the front, with kids stuff in them.Main hall has antique sideboard [ also with shoes in],large painting above, large french mirror on the opposite wall and an enormous artists cabinet [which is absolutely useless as the drawers are only oil-paint tube shapes - bought pre-dc's!].

PlentyOfPrimroses · 30/03/2011 09:22

about 15 pairs of giant clown shoes teenagers' trainers, two skateboards (one broken but I'm not allowed to throw it away), a big cardboard box from something I bought off ebay and am contemplating returning, two carrier bags full of 'mixed dry recyclables' and a catnip mousie.

HTH Smile

GrendelsMum · 30/03/2011 09:22

All the stuff in our hall?

That'll be a vacuum cleaner, a bag full of builder's rubble, a dustpan and brush, a broom, the fabric for the new curtains, and a rusty garden table belonging to a friend's late grandparents.

As a collection of objects, it might sound a little unattractive, but since there's no lighting in there either, you can't see it.

My aim is for it to look more like QueenBathsheba's. DH's aim is to fill it with photos of dogs and cats.

ivykaty44 · 30/03/2011 09:24

Book case, shoe rack, stool, radiator cover with photographs and ornaments, lamp for soft lighting

mumblechum1 · 30/03/2011 09:25

A huge black Chinese vase with red flowers onit on the floor in one corner.

3 mirrors

3 large prints

An olive wood inlaid table with a black lamp on it

A William & Mary console table with silver lamps on each end and a red vase in the middle

Two Indian rugs.

Can you tell I'm in the middle of painting it and am therefore v aware of what's here? Grin

Skinit · 30/03/2011 09:30

We have a white painted bookcase, it's an old one which I did up....and a big painting of flowers....very nice in shades of blue and white...I always put flowers on the bookcase. Atm there is a big cream planter full of ivy and white flowers....forgotten what they're called. They smell amazing and dont last long!

At the foot of the stairs is a basket with a handle for scarves and the kids shoes.

mumblechum1 · 30/03/2011 09:32

We normally also have at least 3 or 4 enormous pairs of trainers/footie boots/Vans sweatily occupying the area by the front door. It is apparently impossible to throw them into the utility room 2 feet away.

mousymouse · 30/03/2011 09:33

we have shoe shelves and a coat cactus and one washing basket. and a rug on the floor.

NorbertDentressangle · 30/03/2011 09:35

Behind the door we have a tall, wide but not very deep (IYSWIM) cupboard for storing shoes.

Further down the hall is a long cupboard (what my mum would call a sideboard but I don't know what they are called these days) that has drawers in the middle and a cupboard space with a door either side. Great for putting bags, scarves, hats and other assorted crap to keep the hall free from clutter.

There is also a wicker chair, handy for the DC to sit on to put shoes on or, more often than not, where they dump their school stuff when they get in.

Oh, and theres an old stoneware barrel-type thing thats used as an umbrella stand

Oh, another thing (its not as cluttered as it sounds honest, as its sort of in two parts and is big) is an old fashioned mannequin that I use for work purposes but in between I use it to put a couple of coats on (main coat storage is in the utility room off the hall)

walesblackbird · 30/03/2011 09:37

We have a burnt orange leather chaise longue, a rug that sort of matches and pictures on the walls. Oh and dh's flip flops which are usually left lying in the middle of the floor.

We keept the junk in the porch - which contains a bench stuffed full of shoes, coats and gloves everywhere and my dh's smelly trainers which he can never be bothered to put away.

Fizzylemonade · 30/03/2011 09:49

Inlaid coconut mat area (it's huge so everyone can wipe their feet) laminate floor for the rest of it.

Nothing else on the floor, I force gently persuade everyone to hang coats up and put shoes away in the room off the hall. Ds1 aged 8 even tells DH to not put his coat over the newel post Grin

On the wall is a mirror and a couple of photos.

I dream of a large wide hall with a quaint old wooden seat with wicker baskets under it for hats/gloves/scarves etc and an umbrella stand (I currently stick wet umbrellas in the store room)

The children use it to skid down in their socks and race cars down it. I love my hall after the last house where I had a cupboard vestibule. It was an insult to halls.

QueenBathsheba · 30/03/2011 09:58

We live in a modest 3 bed house but the hall and landing is disproportionately large compared to the overall size of the house. Dh didn't like it to start with but I nagged and got my own way because having a larger hall somehow makes the house easier to live in and feel bigger than it actually is. Plus it's more welcoming.

My fantasy house would have a huge square hall. A christmas house, where the space is big enough to have a huge christmas tree in the middle.

GothMummy · 30/03/2011 13:03

Pushchair, coat hooks, shoes, dog bed, dog bowl, school bags and mine and DHs work bags... its hard not to let hallways become general dumping grounds as well.

wfrances · 30/03/2011 19:42

dark wood floor
dark wood console table with 2 lamps on it
antique mirror
victorian glass pendant light
large dark wood clock
f&b ball green paint on walls
we have a porch so coats go on the peg rack
shoes/bags go in trunk understairs
