Dumb query about Portaloos

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 25/03/2011 23:34

Just started getting quotes in for extensive renovations / building work.

First quote includes Portaloo hire for builders. We have a toilet and the toilet and plumbing are being replaced towards the end of the build - so I am not clear why a portaloo is necessary. I asked project manager and he said that people don't like a load of strange builders using their lavs all day - am I being dumb or dirty that I don't see a problem with this? I mean - do they shit moulten tar or something???

Advice of the tasteful as possible kind would be welcome. I know it's only a tiny portion of the cost but to be frank portaloos ick me even more. [usedtoworkatglastonburyemoticon]

NB: we are not living here during the build.

We have had one on our build for a couple of months now.Costs arround 100 pounds monthly and is serviced [cleaned] weekly.Believe me if they use your toilet it will be disgusting, and they will trek dirt and mud through your house in the process. Also what happens if the toilet becomes blocked [which is quite likely with heavy use!].Also would you want to clean it because they probably won't.

Do you know what - I read your post, then went to use the bathroom after DH and see your point! Blush Grin

Good to have your quote though - our builders are charging considerably higher.

are you living there while work is done? We have just had a total renovation and they just used the loo that was in and was no problem, but we weren't living there- didnt have a problem with them using either of the new loos too.

If I did a build again I would so get a portaloo - we did an extension last year and let the builders use the downstairs loo (which we then did not use). All of them seemed to need a no.2 in quick succession every morning and the stench was appalling. Several times I had to put notices up asking them to deal with the skid marks.
There was a few days when the toilets upstairs had been ripped out and so we had to share the downstairs loo with the builder - I ended up driving to a friend's house to use the loo and I got DS1 to use a potty rather than using their toilet.
Sorry if that's TMI, hopefully your builders will have better personal habits!

Thanks Cake & Thandeka - I now know more about builders bathroom habits than I ever wanted Grin Grin

Portaloo it is.

We had a portaloo and would definitely get one again. They seem to need to go rather a lot and can't imagine the state of my loo if I had let them use mine.
