Does anyone have a retractable awning in their garden and does it look okay?

My dh thinks its going to look horrible but I think it will be neat and tidy rather than having a pergola type thing with posts. He also thinks the 3m projection won't be enough to keep the sun out? What do people think?

Thanks

Omg! this is so odd.

I think awnings are wonderful and am only sad that we don't need one in our west facing garden (because our own house and the houses next door cast enough shade to make the back of the house comfortable in the evening) but just last night I had a dream where I was at my Uncle's house (he had an awning but also passed away in 2001 and I doubt I had actually been in his house for 10 years before that) and said to him "Uncle G, I should have said this before, but I love your house and I love your awning"

I think you should take this as a portent. His was green and white stripes, btw.

I don't like them, they remind me of ice cream kiosks and the only people I've seen with them installed are eldery people.Sorry.

I thought about an awning as we are overlooked on our patio and would give us a bit more privacy but like Mirage said, they just remind me of ice cream kiosks!

A pergola could be as wide as you want it to be and constantly interesting if you hang baskets from it and grow climbers with different flowering times of the year.

You could also consider a sunsail?

I have a huge 4mx3m retractable awning on the back of my house. Its dark green.

We used it yesterday, the sun was shining on my patio doors making it boiling hot in the lounge, the awning gives us shade in the house iyswim.

Cream canvas looks lovely - no to all the other colours for various reasons.

I think they are great, we can't have one as flat roof above :( and as they extend at an angle, the end would be too low. Have seen one with blue stripes and look fine to me.
