What's the best way to howk out old grout?

Grout in the kitchen is looking a right mess and bleach hasn't worked. Am now looking at regrouting but wanted feedback from folk who have been through the pain of it:o

I regrouted part of our bathroom as it had cracked (newish house - settlement). I found the easiest way was to get a special tool from the diy store (grout remover!). It was relatively straightforward - just got a bit of an aching arm after a while. To regrout I find the easiest way was to use a finger to press the grout into the gap, a bit messy but it worked. I didn't have a huge area to do, maybe about 1 square metre total. It was a while ago so I can't remember how long it took me.
