limefighter and magnaclean fittings for boiler in london, is it worth doing?

Our boiler needs some maintenance and gas man has suggested we install a limefighter (£60) and magnaclean (£150) does anyone know much about these fittings and if its worth doing?

Basically these things remove limescale and sludge from the boiler created by the water and he says it will increase the life of our boiler?

thanks in advance.

I was thinking about a water softening advice (London water is just rank) but was told by a (British Gas) installer that although they stop the build up of limescale, they bugger the workings in some other way. I don't know anything about them but just got put off on the basis of his opinion - would be interested in hearing from someone else as really would like to have softer water.
