quote for painting house

Hi

We have a 3 bedroomed victorian terrace house in london. it's meduim sized and we had a quote to have all the rooms painted for $2k (thats british pounds) - is that reasonable? we thought it was quite a lot and thought it would cost $1k (sorry my keyboard does not pound signs).

What do you think?

If it's inside why not do it yourself?

Thandeka · 18/02/2011 20:13

we are having our 3bed terraced in Bath painted and its costing us £3k but that includes all holes filled, lining paper, paint and all woodwork etc and this place hasnt been touched in a while so we decided it was fair.
worked out approx £350 per room.

it's the inside and there is no way we could do it ourselves. My OH is a disaster when it comes to DIY.

We asked about lining paper as we ahve a lot of cracks that i want covered but he said it was a bad idea as it tends to peel off quite quickly. has anyone had that experience?

the quote also excluded the paint which we have to buy ourselves.

Thandeka - that sounds v expensive.

anyone else?

lining paper shouldn't peel off quickly if applied properly- is like wallpaper, would only peel if damp problem etc.

did your quote include woodwork? wall prep?

We may look at our quote again- we are having so much work done on the place I dont know whether am coming or going!

Lining paper won't peel off if put up properly (and put up horizontally along the wall not vertically) - however it might not cover the cracks so I would get a couple of quotes from plasterers too.

Get two more quotes and pick the middle one.

We had a 5 bed in Surrey done in summer for 5.5k; so your quote for London seems OK to be honest. Ours include everything though - ceilings, coving, skirting, touching up, and the blokes were lovely and even put some pictures up for me afterwards!

pinkcushion · 19/02/2011 09:37

I think that probably a good price.

Thandeka · 19/02/2011 16:57

oh yeah forgot ours included the ceilings too.

I had 5 bedrooms, upstairs and down long and high hall, kitchen, stairwells and dining room done in the summer for £4k but that would have been much more than a 3 bed terrace so it doesn't sound too bad to me
