New Front Door. Big company or local joiner?

Hello, I need to replace my front door and surround. Have never done this before and am wanting to avoid hard sell salesmen.
Today I ordered brouchers online from a couple of "big names" and within half an hour they were phoning me to book a home visit. Really annoyed me, as if I'd wanted to speak to them, I'd have phoned....
Can anyone recommend a company who covers Central Scotland?
How does it work to employ a joiner? Do I have to supply the door etc?
Oh, and what's best UPVC or wood?
Thanks

We have to do the same thing. I think we're going to go with a standard wood door (off the shelf from Wickes or somewhere) and then get someone to fit it. With any chance it'll be a bit cheaper.

Can't bear the big companies, they call round to us and ring us constantly so am loathed to give them money.

No experience of UPVC doors I'm afraid.

My problem is that it's not just the door that needs replaced, but the side panels ( windows either side with wood panels underneath ). The door is taller and wider than standard now.

Weatherseal has now phoned 3 times to speak to me, and Everest twice! Not told them to feck off yet, but close Angry

I used a local joiner/carpenter both times and have been so pleased with the results as my doors were non-standard.

Look up carpenters/joiners in Yellow pages, or ask anyone if they know of craftsmen who can do this for you.

scaryteacher can I ask how much you paid and how the materials were chosen/bought? Thanks.
