Can you have patterned wallpaper and curtains

I'm about to start decorating the living room and I want to get it right so I am looking for advice.

I quite like the idea of patterned wallpaper but am not sure how you match it up with the rest of the room. Is it better to have plain curtains or can you have a subdued pattern on the curtains?

I would stick to plain curtains personally, I think it would make the room look very busy.

Think patterns would be a tad busy, but I think it's OK to use patterns on both as long as the scale looks right ie large pattern for walls, small pattern for curtains, cushions etc. Never done it myself, though! Perhaps stick to plain?
