Can I have a woodburner or open fire in the space left behind by a gas fire with back boiler?

As above really. We replaced the back boiler with a new combi so I'm not talking about a woodburner with backboiler, just putting one in to heat the room and look nice. I really don't want to brick up fireplace! Would an open fire be easier? I know I'll need to get someone round to check out the flue situation, but it would be good to hear anecdotal reports from people who have ripped out a gas fire/back boiler and put something else in its place.

just put you a picture on my profile, we did a bit of work before the woodburner was fitted as there was a a false chimney breast but it was all worth it!

Oh thank you -- it looks lovely (as does the rest of your house, and your DC!). We have a real chimney, but it's not very big (1930s semi), so I think we might be quite restricted in what we can fit in the hole. I'll have to ask the pros about that. I'm quite excited now I've seen yours!
