Homeless and no end in sight

I have no idea why i'm posting here but need some more ideas and maybe someone can help.
My landlord is in the process of being repossessed and we had to leave the property this week.
I had found another house for me and my 3 children to move to but it fell through 4 days before moving in (the origional tenants are staying), there really is nothing else on the market in my price range.
currently we are staying with my parents on the opposite side of town. so its a long trek and lots of traffic to take the children to school and to get to work. But the children have had a lot of upheaval latley with a divorce and this so i really do not want to move areas and leave jobs and schools.
my eldest is mid gcse in science and maths and all children have active social lives play for local teams etc.
the council can not help, they do not have a house to put us in, they don;t even have any b&b facilities.
i currently pay the vast majority of my rent but do have a small part paid by housing benefit, so the amount i can afford is restricted and even if i had severalhundred pounds a month more to spend there still is not any properties out there.
things are strained here to say the least, i left home at 17 as i do not get on with my mum so to return 17 years later with a failed marriage, and 3 children and 2 dogs in tow is rather difficult.
i do have a deposit and a guarantor so the initial checks etc aren;t a problem as such. i also have references for the last few years that rent paid on time etc.
ay other ideas of what to do?

No ideas but your situation sounds so stressful, I really hope things get better for you soon.

Check the local paper, news agents windows, put out an SOS on the local netmums board, keep talking to the housing department they should have a list of social landlords.
Good luck x

have contacted shelter and cab but the only advise given so far has been to 'sue' the council for neglecting thier duties.
in their defence the woman that i saw did spend several hours ringing around all of their temporary accomadation and the landlords that they have on thier books to see what she could find.
i have to ring back today to see if they have managed to secure a studio flat for us to stay in temporalily, but no chance of an actual house or flat as of yet.
they have said that they can give me a deposit and first months rent in advance but thatys not an issue as i have that already.
i'm trying to be posititve today and something will turn up soon, eithe rprivtaley or the council.
engelbert - how was b&b i know its not going to be nice but was it horrific? did you find private rent or council in the end?
sorry nosey questions, i'm glad you're all sorted now though wouldn;t wish this on anyone.

I don't know if this is a bit ridiculous and off the point, but can you offload the dogs for a couple of months until you get sorted? Maybe loan them to friends or see if the local kennel / vet knows anyone who can care for them until you get sorted. It may reduce the pressure a little in your mum's house and lessen the impact of you all arriving. Whilst my family will not have a dog, although my dd would love one, we would happily foster one for a couple of months. Unfortunately we live about 400 miles form scotland, so can't help on this.

I appreciate your biggest problme is getting a house for your family - I am just thinking of things which might ease the situation in the short term.
