Red kitchen, yes or no?

I'm thinking of painting the kitchen red. We moved in a few months ago, the house was fitted with a new kitchen before we moved in, the kitchen work tops are black and cupboard door are beach effect (basicly cheep kitchen units), if i had enough money i would replace the doors for white and have a country kitchen but as money is tight i have to make do with whats already there. Would red be a bit too much or would it go well with the black?

i think if you like it then do it!

when i saw the thread title i thought you were going to ask about red units, which i think is a bit much and may put off potential buyers if you come to sell

but a coat of paint? think it'll be fab :)
and if you hate it you can just paint over it

Which red?

And what kind are the kitchen doors? i.e. how will they take the paint? Will it be paint on plastic?

I think it depends on the size of the kitchen.
High gloss red and black can look great in large spaces. What sort of look are you wanting? You could tone it down a bit with wall colour, otherwise it might seem a bit heavy.

I think you mean the walls, or do you mean the units?

Lucycat · 31/01/2011 19:58

This sort of red kitchen?

I will keep the kitchen units/doors as they are (not brave enough to paint them), the kitchen is a reasonable size. I was thinking maybe a traffic light red (bright). Most of the house is painted in pale colours, i have never been brave enough to go for something bright or really dark. So i will only be painting the walls (so it can easily be pained over again if it doesn't work).

oh yes, sorry i assumed you meant the walls...?

scurryfunge · 31/01/2011 20:01

Ah, ok, sorry!

Do it! I love red, although I'm always tempted by Georgian dining room/library reds.

Wall paint is (in interior terms) about the cheapest way to really transform the look of a room. You can just paint over it if you don't like it.

(The kitchen units would have been a risky attempt as harder to get them back if it did look rubbish).

I think i will just go for it Grin, at the moment my kitchen looks really dull, i spend a lot of time cooking so would like it to look nice (best room in the house).

I have a red kitchen, very similar to the one in your picture op.
Blck worktops and birch units.
I love it.
