How should I treat the hardwood handrail on my stairs?

I've removed the last 50 years of paint, and now have a rather beautiful mahogany-looking handrail which is super smooth and fine-grained. I've given it a light sand but the colour is a bit uneven and it looks like it might want some love. The internet is not proving very helpful. I don't see any reason to varnish it, but what about oil? Any experience?

I would have a look at the Fiddes website for ideas, maybe think of waxing it.
If you can find a Fiddes stockist you could ask for their advice, I've always found them very helpful.

Oh thanks arfanarf, that's interesting. I've never heard of Fiddes, but it's very useful to see all the options. Looks like waxing might well be the way to go.
