Trapped air in water pipes

After a leak on the road last night the water from our taps is spurting everywhere when turned on. Is it dangerous to use while it's like this? (I am waiting for the water company to get back to me but would like to flush the loo, etc if possible in the meantime).

I could but the taps are very shuddery (and old) - might they break?
