Getting rid of old telephone cables

I am just about to start redecorating my hall and the doors and skirting boards are lined with old phone cables. I know at least some of them are no longer in use as we removed a couple of phone sockets in other rooms. So do I need to get a specialist phone engineer to remove them or just an ordinary electrician? Or could I do it myself? And would it cost a fortune? I seem to remember BT trying to charge me a fortune to put a cable in upstairs for a computer and I'm on a budget. Thanks for any advice.

If you know which one is the active one, I'd just pull out the others myself.
