Grey velvet sofas.....need some inspiration

Hello! We're in the middle of renovating our new house and while DH does the dusty stuff, I'm in charge of decor!

I've fallen in love with a grey velvet corner sofa which will be placed in a large square living room with walnut flooring. I thought that once I'd chosen the sofas the rest would come easily but now I'm a bit stumped with which wall colour/s to go for.

I can't post links at the mo but the sofa is on a site called Loungin and we're going for the Modus corner sofa in the same fabric as shown on the Mitford sofa.

Any help would be much appreciated!

grey velvet sounds fab! Would look great with purples, teals and emerald greens. Are you thinking of paint or paper for the walls? How about whisper grey, or a pale, chalky blue or duck egg? You can bring in a bolder colour with some curtains, maybe in velvet, damask, or something similarly rich and lush....

Would look great with antiquey-silver accessories (candlesticks / photoframes etc). Linda Barker does some nice stuff.

Look at Bone from Farrow and Ball - slightly green, slightly brown, slighlty grey.

Very nice

yellow tones look nice with grey. You could paint walls grey - we use blackened by f&b, the had the odd yellow cushion. have a look at designers guild website.

Sofa sounds lovely.

Moomin! You moved! I have been lurking on Property hoping to see your name somewhere!

We've been in since Dec 10th and still loving it despite the artex! The pain of the moving process is starting to fade...slightly!

Hope it was smooth in the end and it's all going well. Off to have a look at the sofa website now. Smile

Hi IHKT! Yep! We're getting there! We had it all done in about 7 weeks - one day before primary school application deadline - phew!

We're staying in our rented house until end of Feb which has given us 6 weeks to get a head start on decorating. We got the keys last Monday, and have been going full steam ahead, knocking down walls and ripping out kitchen & bathroom so the whole place looks like a dodgy subway at the moment - but it's ours! Grin

I am liking these F&B colours, had never heard of them until I met Mumsnet. Thw lounge is a big square with the staircase running up along the back wall. I'm thinking of maybe F&B Great White or Blackened as luckywinner suggested, with a subtle patterened paper in as close a colour as I can get to run along the back wall and upstairs to the landing. I'm thinking a bit of continuation....not sure if I'm on the right track or being boring. For some reason I thought I'd be much better at decorating than I actually am!

Blackened is lovely but it is very blue-toned; in some lights it looks pale blue.

We have grey sofas and wooden floors. We used F&B Strong White on the walls, which is a soft pale grey when contrasted with white woodwork (used on its own, it looks white). We've used yellows and greens as accent colours - they both look lovely with grey.

Hester that sounds lovely - I'm getting very into mustard as an accent colour with grey - actually I'm just getting very into mustard.

I'm trying to talk myself out of an olive green phase...

IHeartKingThistle · 26/01/2011 10:35

And moomin, I can't believe we both got in in the nick of time! Who'd have thought it in November eh?

hester · 26/01/2011 20:56

Mustard, olive, citrine... I love them all against a nice charcoal. Sadly the rest of the world does too, so they'll be out of date soon, but nothing's going to stop me.
