Painting a varnished front door

Hi, my front door is lovely - except it is currently stained/varnished and I would like to paint it using a lovely gloss paint and put new fixtures and fittings on it.

I can't afford to replace it, can't afford to have a decorator in, so need some step by step instructions on how I can do this myself, inexpensively.

Please help?!

  1. Rub down with coarse sandpaper.
  2. Rub down with white spirit and wire brush.
  3. Rub down with fine sandpaper.
  4. Paint on 2 or 3 coats of Dulux Weathershield or other outdoor gloss.

Did this to our front door when we moved here as varnigh was peeling and couldn't afford a new door. Lasted about 4 or 5 years until it started to look manky again and have since replaced the door.

Are you sure that by the time you buy the paint, new fixtures and fittings it will not have been cheaper to by a new door?

Thanks mamijacacalys

I've had a look around for some fittings and think I'll be doing it myself! I do enjoy a little project! How long did it take you to do?
