Has anyone put Victorian style tiles on floor in hall?

Have an Edwardian house and thinking of doing it will traditional style tiles.

Anyone done it?

The ones I have seen look like they will be expensive which may put DH off.

They probably would be expensive, but as someone who has recently moved into a late Victorian house with a tiled front path, they may well be very slippery when people come in with wet shoes. My path is lovely, but I feel it will only be a matter of time before someone slips on it. I only have teenagers and wouldn't like to think of little ones running on tiles and falling over.

People coming into my house with wet shoes???? No chance! They can come in the back!

Do you mean inside the house? I have a friend who did it and it looks really good. Not sure how much it cost but I think its probably was expensive.

Yes - inside. Just the hallway.

We have them in our hallway and they don't become slippy.I should imagine that they become slimy outside though.These encaustic tiles are characteristic of edwardian houses though and do look lovely.You would need a really good tiler as mine are laid with virtually no grout line which is very different to modern tiling practice.

We put a victorian diagonal checkerboard style with border in black and white 3 inch tiles in the hall in our last house. It cost about £1k as the meterage wasn't that big (about 5 sqm) including fitting. The effect was very dramatic and I thought it was worth it. Main problem was that they did need cleaning about twice per week, more in wet weather with dirty footprints.

If you go for a black and white design it will be cheaper as you don't have to buy coloured tiles and therefore don't have to go down the specialist supplier route. You should be able to pick up black/white 3 inch tiles for around £70 psqm.

Make sure that you get a good tiler, as they need to be laid very close together with hardly any spaces.

in our vestibule. Couldn't afford to do the entire hall at the time but would love to now.

We have them in our porch and hall. They were already in when we bought.
Sweep/mop when I do kitchen floor and a couple of times I scruc them with old fashioned cream cleaner (a tip from the Internet). They do look the part, and get loads of admiring comments, but think carefully about predominant colour as our green & terracotta don't really go with other decor we'd ideally choose.

Not sure about black and white. I saw some lovely ones at Fired Earth - pale green and aubergine on cream. I think it could look lovely. Will depend on price!

Will do some research and see if I can price up what it will all cost and take it from there.

No,they are the originals [as far as i can tell!].In terms of colours we have several,blue,white,3 diff. browns,terracotta,straw,black and a different pattern border round the edge.It must have been quite some work to do then.I can't imagine how much something like that would cost now.
Incidentally has anyone got any tips for cleaning and shining them as ours just get mopped these days.However when we moved in they were lovely and shiny and i have never been able to get them that way again.[sorry for hijack Buda!]

A friend has done it in their Victorian/Edwardian house and it looks great, like it was always there. I am very envious (they have also put in new sash windows..) Whereas we inherited pvc windows in our Edwardian house & dodgy floorboards...
