To move or not to move?

We currently live in a nice town but are in catchment for pretty average middle and sec school. DD is in reception. We could move to the other side of town to be in area for the better schools but would be a stretch financially even if we could afford it (we would probably need help from family).
However if we moved about 25 miles north we could afford a much bigger house - extra room downstairs, much bigger garden. This place is also in catchment for some very good schools.
I just wonder what people reckon. DD is nearly 5 and DS is 18 months. Would it be best to move within our town for the people we already know (and really like)and get into the better schools within or town, or move and get much better schools and house but have to start again socially? Also when do you think is the best time to do this - before DS starts school or shortly after (ie - before dd due to go to middle school). The place 25miles north would be nearer my dh work but much further for mine - though I am PT. Thanks - sorry for such a long post just really want a second opinion!
