Anyone live in Falkirk or surrounding areas??

We are considering moving to the Falkirk area after looking online at some houses which are within our budget but I don't know alot about the area. Is it a good place to bring up children? What about the villages around Falkirk, are they any good?

I went to look at a house in Sauchie about 5 years ago and refused to get out of the car.
I could be a total snob here, but it seemed a bit rough. Have a pal who lives in Denny which is better. A lot of old mining villages I think.
Where are you atm? Go and have a drive around the area and see what it's like.
Grangemouth refinery always spooks me when I drive past it on the moterway.
Personally I'd go ( and have lived ) further north or south on the M9. That bit of the country doesn't do it for me.
Really good road links though.

why falkirk, apart from price there isn't a whole lot to recommend it? polmont is ok

DuplicitousBitch · 21/01/2011 21:31

where are you right now?

mozette · 21/01/2011 21:32

I'm from Denny originally and while the town centre is a dump (due to Falkirk Council not spending any money outwith what tourists will see) the town itself is lovely! Bonnybridge and Banknock not so much. I would steer clear of Hallglen too.

I'm in Stirling now but if you let us know what area in particular you are looking at I'll give you my (personal) opinion ;)

the one way system is a total mind fuck

We live in Dennyloanhead and moved here while I was pregnant with ds1 almost two years ago. I like loving in the smaller village enviroment and have made many new baby friends. Good commuter connections to Stirling and Glasgow. I like having the canal and a small nature reserve on my doorstep for nice walks.

I have friends in neighbouring Bonnybridge and Denny and they live in nice estates.

What areas are you thinking about?

babybear5 · 21/01/2011 21:50

Hi i live in Dennyloanhead and have been here about 7 years now. I agree with Aonach, canal is great, easy commute and lovely people in this little village. Grin
Aonach..would i know you Smile..i have a 10 month dd so have new baby friends also Grin

babybear5 · 21/01/2011 21:54

forgot to add lovechoc that dennyloanhead is only a 15 min commute from centre of falkirk and the schools in the area are great with a lot of out of school activities around the area.

Aonach · 22/01/2011 20:58

Babybear not sure if our paths have crossed. DS is 15 months and youngest babies I know locally are probably 1 now.

I'd be well up for a dennyloanhead mini mumsnet meet up walk at canal or nature reserve. Are you finished your mat leave yet?

I'm fairly new to mumsnet but I think you can pm here? (off to suss this out)

babybear5 · 22/01/2011 21:10

Aonach.. A mini mumsnet meet would be great. Smile I head to the canal every friday with the bonny strollers buggy group. Great way to meet others.
My son is 2..well almost 3 and little dd is 11 months (another 3 also but older)
I am a stahm at the moment so don't have to fit anything round work and husband manages the tavern in haggs so pretty flexible that way.
Would be lovely to meet Grin

Live in Fife just now, but cannot afford a bigger house here at all!! (never thought I'd see the day, but all the Edinburgh folk have priced us out). :(

Soo..the only houses we've seen that we can afford are on the outskirts of Falkirk (Denny, Hallglen etc).

Not willing to move any further west because most family links are in Fife/Edinburgh. The Weege is out of the question.

Someone mentioned Hallglen... We had a look around the area, and although it seemed rough in parts, there were also nice parts to it too (where in some streets most of the homes were bought). Found this in Denny also.
