About stair runners

Better to be thick or thin?

What else do i need? Those metal things?

I will be grateful for any tips.

dont need those metal things, they are decorative. a good capet fitter will tell you about width etc, it depends on the width of your stairs.

So if i dont buy the metal things how do you attach it? I don't mean carpet but runner rug.

aha. ok so you want to buy a runner and attach to the stairs? the metal things dont actually fit them to the carpet, its just decorative. when you have a carpet style runner fitted, they nail/glue it to the stairs invisibly. to be safe you'd need to do something similary, otherwise you'll break your neck on it.

Ah - you mean if I got a new stair runner it would be attached by nails? Because I've inherited ancient carpet with I think original Victorian metal things, and it's loose under the metal!

Which we found out when one bit came out... par for the course in my house (30 years of bodging and neglect before we got it)

you could probably get a carpet person to come out and refix if you like the carpet.... note if they are the origianl metal things they may be worth a bit so if you are not reusing dont throw away!

Thanks - suspect like most of the 'original features' in this house they're so corroded and buggered they're not worth anything.

I was really excited when we found a load of beautiful Victorian fireplace tiles which had been removed with the fireplace and then used to prop up the carpet where the fire used to be - until realising they were all broken. :(

Ah ok so i just have to use nails. I see those metal things everywhere in decor photos and i thought they are compulsory and serve a purpose. Now i ll save money from not buying them which means i can spent more on the rug, you 've made my day!
