Family room storage that's not IKEA.

We now have 1 reception rooms and want to use one as family room. We have sofa, chair and tv.

We need storage for toys, DVDs, ps3 games, books etc as well as somewhere to put tv and various boxes.

I like the IKEA expedit type thing but it seems a bit ubiquitous and am worried or will look a bit cheap.

Any other ideas?

We did the same thing at the last house. We knew exactly what we wanted, looked around for ages & couldn't find what we wanted - so called a couple of local blokes who had done some other work - one quoted £4000 and the other £6000.... went with Ikea, not exactly what we wanted but close enough - £1000 (lots of storage needed!!).

I did think about starting up a business doing 'Playroom' fit-outs (design, source etc) but with the recession - decided now wasn't the time.

A lot of our storage is homemade or made by a local joiner. Its not expensive if you use cheaper materials like MDF which you then paint and one if you is good at DIY or you know a reasonable local joiner or chippie, dependent on how complicated you make it. DH this year has made a bookcase unit, we couldn't find one to fit in Ikea, two desk type things, one for DC in the playroom, one for us in the living area, and is in the process of making the innards for a walk in wardrobe.

A local chippie helped with the 2.5m long window seat which has storage doors under - we designed it, bought the doors from Ikea, and he made the carcass and fitted the doors with hinges etc.

It takes a bit of thought and a bit more time, but the end product will be excatly what you want and fit the space perfectly.
