How much do these things cost?

OK, so I am thinking of moving back to our flat in London on a part-time basis. It has been tenanted for the past 3 years and will definitely need updating. It is a small, 2 bedroom flat with 2 bathrooms and a tiny kitchen.

I would like to do the following:

  • new carpet throughout (2 beds, lounge & hall)
  • new kitchen (small)
  • new bathrooms (2)
  • painted throughout.

Could somebody please give me a rough idea of how much these things cost? I would have to get someone in to do them.

Thanks very much!

Fulla

Hi Fulla,
i have done a similar flat few months ago.

  • new carpet: I don't know because i hate carpets Grin i have put laminate floor and paid £300 to buy it (ebay) and £200 to fit it (no fancy company, a local man, took him 1 and half day)
  • New kitchen: Cheap IKEA cupboards, bQ sink and tap, and then a local man to fit it, total £1,000 including everything. You can do it all IKEA and fit it by them but it costs more.
  • Bathroom: haven't done it.
  • Paint: I was told London rates are £100-£120 per room but then i hired 2 local men who agreed for £500 including skirtings.

This was all on very tight budget. If you can afford it and hire professional companies will be much higher but less hassle i guess. But if you are on low budget like me it can be done by local people who work hard but don't have fancy websites and shops.

Usuful sites: www.peoplerated (for labour quotes), www.diynot, www.moneysaving and ofcourse mumsnet!
Good Luck Smile
