Cover up for nasty kitchen cupboards?

Hi, advice needed! I'm useless at DIY and we live in rented accommodation, but our kitchen units are this awful 80s speckled grey - they're cheap chipboard cupboards with a plastic-y covering. I can't explain it any better than that! Recently I've been fantasising that there is some kind of durable stick on cover up stuff for crap cupboards, that, when used, wouldn't look like it was stuck on but would actually look good. Am I dreaming or does something like this actually exist?!

Thanks - do you know what it is called? Is it a wallpaper, or a sticker, or something else?
