...has anyone got or seen those gel type real fires...are they expensive to run? -- do they give out any heat? ...need a flue...? or a waste of time...?

I have one! They do give of quiet a bit of heat and can smell a little (put in essential oils and is fine), also crackles like a real fire. A gel tin lasts about 5 hours (each bottle of gel lasts 15 hours.

Been fine for us but don't have it on often.
