New Shropshire search - thoughts on Wem anyone?

Have been following lexp72's thread on Shrewsbury/Ludlow with interest, as we're also looking to relocate to the the same area.

We were originally looking around Ludlow/Tenbury/Cleobury Mortimer, but thanks to the fab information on the other thread we're also looking further up, and spotted Wem, which looks promising. Does anyone have any knowledge of it? (Or Tenbury/Cleobury/similar).

Our criteria are easy (walking) access to decent primary/secondary schools, shops etc. Happy to drive a bit for main shopping.

Currently we're extremely rural, so the villages we're looking at look like bustling metropolises!

Many thanks :)

Oooh, goody, more comments :) Thankyou.

I forgot Church Stretton - it is already on the list.

OK, so mixed views on Wem. Will be very interesting to go and see these places for real now. Have been mooching on rightmove/streetview so far.

All comments gratefully recieved - still quite keen on the Tenbury area too, as this is somewhere we've actually visited, albeit briefly.

Church Stretton is lovely. We use to go there for family days out etc.

Let us know what you think of Wem. I havent been back there for a long time so it might have changed now.

Good luck, Overall Shropshire is a lovely county and I really miss living there, its also not so expensive and easy commute to Manchester and Birmingham - great choice! :)

Shropshire is very beautiful and you can be very 'rural' and still be near to a large town like Shrewsbury or Wellington. My parents live in a village about five miles out of Wem with NO shops and they are getting v. annoyed with it now.

church Stretton is known as the Switzerland of Shropshire (apparently) so probably worth a look.

Church Stretton is very beautiful and rather quaint to live in and the schools are excellent. There is a large affluent elderly population which comes with some advantages and some disavantages[especially when dashing round the supermarket!].House prices are also fairly high due to a lot of southerners moving here.It is a 1950's world still and a complete contrast to city life and behaviours.

Hmm, am very intrigued by Church Stretton now, thankyou.

All the various areas we're looking at seem to have houses we could afford.

Leaning towards Tenbury Wells at the moment, although preferences changing regularly depending on what comes up on rightmove! :)

I know I am bumping an old friend, but I have friends who have moved to Cockhutt (near Ellesmere). Apparently both the primary and secondary schools are excellent, and the family really like the area. I also like visiting.

Cockshutt even.
