Can you alter a table lampshade to work on a ceiling fitting?

I have just bought two gorgeous lampshades online but was stupid enough not to check whether they would work on a ceiling. Turns out they are the kind that are meant for table lights. They are the right size for ceiling shades but the metal bit inside is too low down. Does anyone have any bright ideas? I had a brain wave involving bits of cotton and blu-tack but DH was a bit Hmm

Has anyone successfully converted a shade that didn't have a convertible metal bit? I am desperate to use these shades on the ceiling - they are perfect for my sitting room/dining room! [hsmile]

Are the metal fittings split (hinged) in the middle?

Sometimes you can twist the bottom bit so its at the top and hence fits a ceiling fitting.

No, sadly not! That is apparently called a "reversible gimble" - i've done some research!
