Can someone help me figure out what on earth has appeared on our living room wall?

It definitely wasn't there before.

It looks like water damage from the past that someone has tried to paint over but the stain is coming through again as they haven't used the right paint.

Is that a possibility?

You have water coming through from somewhere

Water leaking and causing damage.

It's hard to tell more as both photo's are a bit faint.

Is it an outside wall with guttering/pipes nearby that may be leaking?

Is the a sink or some source of water about that could have a leak?

Could even be dodgy pointing if it's an outside wall.

Bollocks. That's what I thought :( It is an outside wall. We already have one damp patch near our front door (which smells) that the landlord wont fix.

This'll be the second flat with a leaky roof.
