Looks like it is the best compromise for everbody's commute but reminds me a bit of Esher without the gates!

I grew up in East Horsley but probably don't have any sensible adult perspective on it. As a teenager it was a bit of a pain not really being able to go anywhere or meet friends without a lift (unless we all went to Guildford on the train, which we did, all the time). Posher friends used to hang around at the tennis club. The village is useful for basic shopping, and I frequented the library throughout my childhood. I read loads and loads, perhaps because Horsley library was my principal source of entertainment, so you might consider that a bonus. I wouldn't say there's a great sense of community, but that might be because my parents regard themselves as non-Surrey types and ran a mile from some of the events on offer. It's probably no less convivial than any other commuter location really.

I would not consider it at all Esher-like -- to me Esher is a relative metropolis, what with the cinema and restaurants and all! Esher represents the bright(ish) lights to a Horsley teenager!

Actually, I do think it's a nicer place than Esher though. Much prettier, and you have a good variety of short-range destinations for Saturday errands or mooching -- we often headed into Dorking, and Leatherhead and Cobham are both handy. I think you see a lot more attractive landscapes as a denizen of Horsley than of Esher. Our school run took us past lovely trees and horses and so on. I think I am positivey recommending it Smile.

Thanks for your comments really helpful, we are worried about when they are teenagers but we are 10 years away from that so may move again. I didn't like Guildford town centre itself so have ruled out living in the city, still looking at Godalming and villages south of Guildford. DS likely to go to Cranmore so it would be convenient for him to buy in East Horsley. I'm a city girl, I'm a bit afraid of making the move.

Four years down the line and we're thinking of a similar move - Fiddledee - wondering what you decided in the end and how it has worked out? Thanks
