Floor tiles material

I'm getting myself confused!
I've fallen in love with 2 tiles for my kitchen floor and am tossing up between them

  1. Slate. Do they need treating? If so is this a 1 off treatmnent or do I need to do it on a regular basis?
  2. Travertine. Same questions really.

Or would I be better going with ceramic and going for the 'effect' tiles?

Oh I'm so confused.

Go for porcelain ones every time imo. There is tons of choice and you just put them down and forget them. We went to Fired Earth and looked at terracotta tiles for our kitchen when the DCs were about 6 and 4. After the lady described the maintenance regime it took two seconds to change our minds. Slate and travertine may be easier, though, but look into it carefully and think about how much time you have (which is obviously what you are doing Smile).

I can't help you regarding maintenance but wickes have some really nice tiles on offer at the moment[including slate].I have just ordered some marble and some stone-effect ones for a really good price. It is well-worth a look on the website.
