Has anyone used upmystreet to get quotes for an extension and did you get a good result?

I would never do this. You need a builder to see plans, location, view any problems with access etc - no decent builder will estimate without seeing a job. Get 10 sets of plans printed off and send to companies through recommendations or try your local trading standards who list all verified companies in your locality. Try www.trustmark.org.uk

No bacon. What happens is builders contact you and then come to the site and submit a quote Smile

I have used Rated People with great success.Several builders contacted me and some came to estimate.I found a good builder who came with excellent references.I also had some interest from builders 90 miles away.I still think the best way to find a builder is through personal recommendation .

sorry for the dumb question but where do you get the plans from first?

teta · 21/09/2010 22:10

You need to get plans drawn up by an architect or an architectural technician.

ahh... never heard of this before thought it was some other site. I deal with lots of builders and they've never mentioned this. I'd still go through the trustmark or even drive around and see who is working locally.

Some good builders can draw up plans too. As an ex-technician years ago we used to do plans on the side but the designer needs indemnity insurance these days do complete the b-regs.

You can also measure the square area and do a quick tot-up to get a ball park figure.
