we used to live quite near there. It's okay.

There are some lovely villages not too far away - Church Fenton, Barkston Ash to name a couple.

Tadcaster itself lovely as well - don't know what it's like to live, but to live five or so miles away and visit it was lovely.

Sherburn is pleasant, lots of reasonably priced houses, good nursery up the road, great butchers etc, however the secondary school is Sh*. If you are moving for the long term then I'd def go for Tad, or one of the villages that feeds into tad grammar - church fenton used to but doesn't any longer so check carfeully which do - ulleskelf may still do for instance.

ahh brillliant thanks for the replies, we have looked at the villages but there isn't much on the market for our price range and sherburn and tadcaster are cheaper.

We have a toddler so I think that tadcaster may be a better option for a family home, seen some stuff online now about chavs in Sherburn. I hark from hull for the last 10 years so was hoping to move away from all that :o

Sherburn is a bit rough compared to the much more pleasant surrounding villages. It's ok to use for convenience stores but just 5 minutes drive away and its all far more pleasant. I live in Church Fenton which is very quiet and the quality of life here is fantastic!
This area is on the border of Yorkshire's "Golden Triangle" (the areas roughly in between north Leeds, Harrogate and York) which is by far the nicest part of Yorkshire in my opinion!

I dont know if youve made your choice yet but i live in sherburn and work in tadcaster. I much prefer sherburn to live, but im on moorlane which is a nice street on its from much else. I like tadcaster, but we are always getting are windows broken everytime school holidays are about from bored kids. I think this sort of thing happens everywhere. But i definately dont think sherburn is rougher than tadcaster. Id say this sort of thing happens everywhere. Kids are kids. I do really like south milford, and may move there one day, but i feel that sherburn is very family orientated.
