shelves needed for heavy books

Want to put shelves up in my dd's closet for her books. What should I be looking for so that I know they'll be secure? Last think I want is for them to fall down on her when she pulling out books.
It's an outside wall. (drywall cavity then brick -as far as I know- with no 'studs')
This may seem like a stupid question, but I'm used to wood framed houses....

You are right - it is not the shelves you have to worry about but the wall they are fixed to.

IME brick walls are lot less secure than stud walls especially in old houses as bricks crumble etc

Is there some sort of cementy glue then to use? Even with butterfly screws it doesn't seem like it'd be strong enough...
do I have to put in bookshelves to be safe(r)?
