About leaving home for the first time. I decided to stay at home and attend the local uni, and am now going into my final year, after which I'd quite like to move up to Manchester.

I'd definitely be renting, either on my own or with a friend, but we are both clueless as we still live with our families. No kids yet so that's not an issue.

What do I need to know about:

Finding a place.
How to view with a sensible head on. I am guessing in a rented flat we're not allowed to decorate?
Agreeing the terms etc, the legal stuff basically.
What to look out for in a property (good and bad)
How to actually, physically move (neither of us drive unfortunately, me due to sight issues) and get settled in
What we'll need to bring with us/buy for the place
How to be good renters
How to make friends in a new area.

Basically, a guide to finding, moving and renting would be lovely.
Thank you!

How to view with a sensible head on. - go to different agents and let them show you flats. give them an idea what you want. eg 1bed flat 100pw... when viewing look and smell for mold, look what furniture is there and ask if the ll would take it out if for example you want to bring your own bed.
I am guessing in a rented flat we're not allowed to decorate? - you can, but wouldn*t with a six months lease...
Agreeing the terms etc, the legal stuff basically. - would always go through an agent, less hassle if something is wrong, make sure you get an inventory.
What to look out for in a property (good and bad) - is water included in the lease? water meter? are the windows shutting properly (heating bills)?
How to actually, physically move (neither of us drive unfortunately, me due to sight issues) and get settled in - man & van do things like that, look into your local paper
What we'll need to bring with us/buy for the place - have look around some places have everything including cutlery and duvet others are very basic and really only have furniture
How to be good renters - pay rent on time, take care of the property, let landlord/agency know of any problems/leaks
How to make friends in a new area - be friendly to the neighbors, take a look at courses at the community centres
