Hi Everyone I want to move a gas meter from where it is parked in the current dining room in my soon to be new home(vic semi) it could go just on the outside wall where it is. Thing is I don't know who to contact in relation to this - is it my energy supplier (Eon) at the mo and does anyone know how much it might cost? V excited having just been back for second viewing and dreaming of new bathroom and kitchen (grin).

Thanks so much Fiolondon I like the idea of the meter in the gound but looks like it could be more work - it will sit down the side where it's not seen so not too much of a problem. Have you had experience of this - on the web site it says a gas safe engineer can do it - am I reading it right?

I had this done about 9 years ago so things may have changed a bit. I did it with both the gas and electric.
I had the meters which were partly buried in the cavity so they only protrude a few inches with a white door on the cabinets.
As far as I can remember I had to contact Transco who own the meter and the pipes up to the meter and they moved the meter and I also had to have a gas engineer to connect the new meter up to the house.

I don't want to upset you, but I tried to get this done recently and it was going to cost £3,000 - to move it about 4ft.

They are no longer (since 2004) allowed to 'split off' from a pipe, so for mine they had to go back to the mains supply and put a whole new pipe in - through the road, pavement, up the side of the house etc.

I was hugely pissed off as it's in a stupid, stupid place and moving it 4ft would put it on an outside wall, but I just can't justify £3000 :(

If you only have a grass verge from the mains pipe and it's not too far, it will probably be around £1000

Good Luck!
