Rental Contents Insurance

Just sold house but have nowhere to go so are going into a rental for 6 months till we find somewhere. However the letting agency wont let us have the rental property until we can prove we have contents insurance. We dont need this. Can they force us? What difference does it make to them if we have contents insurance or not?

Why do you need contents insurance? Even if it is a furnished let you cant insure someone else's stuff as you have no financial interest in it. Nor can you insure your own stuff if it is covered elsewhere or not in the property. Ask for a written explanation of why this is required.

I'm renting, was accepted for 2 houses but chose the one I live in. Neither applications mentioned contents insuurance, although I do have this very cheaply with CIS.
