Are wooden stairs a death trap?

It turns out our stairs are surprisingly nice under their manky old carpet, if you discount the orange gloss someone has painted down the sides, presumably some time in the 70s

DH and I are both in favour of sanding and varnishing. DSIL thinks that they cause far too much slippage to be safe. Is she right? Have never had wooden stairs before. They are double winding (is that right?) ie they go round two corners so DD wouldn't have too far to fall before being stopped by a wall ...

if you used matt varnish they shouldn't be too slippy I don't think.

Bloody noisy though

Have you considered a runner down the middle?

scurryfunge · 29/07/2010 22:27

Mine are wooden and not a problem...just don't high polish them. They are noisy though.

DitaVonCheese · 29/07/2010 22:39

Yeah, DH thinks they might be noisy. I think it might stop DD sneaking downstairs

I've thought about a runner but it just seems to double the cleaning required and I am a slattern

We have learned to tip toe but unfortunately the spaniel hasn't!

not slippy at all i have found.

Wave to DVC.

I have stripped and varnished stairs and I do feel they are unsafe though ours are steep with no turns. They also get very dusty nd hairy very quickly. On the other hand they look lovely.

Hellloooo DF

Thanks all! Looks like we might go with wood if we can get the orange gloss off ...

Nitromors is great for shifting thick paint without getting horrible dust everywhere (it is messy but more contained mess )
