Garden shed/playhouse.. to paint or not to paint?

We've had a small wooden playhouse for about a year now. I need to put another coat of that wood preservative stuff and I can't decide whether to just keep on with the boring brown or whether to give into pressure from ds1 and paint it blue.

my experience with coloured wood preservative is not good - I did this to a lovely garden bench and the paint peeled off in a really awful unattractive way.

so do I go with the 'safe option' of fairly colourless brown preservative or do we 'go blue'?

We painted ours with something called Garden Shades - it was either Cuprinol or Homebase. The previous playhouse was yellow, the paint lasted about 10 years with minimal peeling. Our current one is now 2 years old and looking OK - if you click my name and scroll down to the bottom of my pictures you'll see a pic of it, it's cream with blue windows & roof edges.

Decorate it - DS will love it and it will look great!

thanks - that is the cuprinol range that I was looking at.

We've used the Cuprinol range too. Admittedly we've only had it a couple of months but it looks great, and so much better painted than just wood. I think it should last pretty well as well, maybe needing a fresh coat every couple of years.

thanks.

now all I need is a day with no rain

this is a pic of my bike but its leaning on the DSs playhouse that was brown but is cuprinol blue and cream!!

MrsTicklemouse · 28/07/2010 19:32

if you want to know the exact colours let me know and I'll send DH to the shed!

MrsTicklemouse · 28/07/2010 19:34

ooo Housemum I think we've used the same colours but the other way round!

MrsTicklemouse · 28/07/2010 19:37

and interestingly the playhouse paint is still perfect but the bench we did at the same time has peeled to a kind of shabby chic effect
the playhouse did have an extra coat or two though!!

I will stop posting now!!

Cuprinol Garden shades very nice. Doesn't look like it is going to peel. We used barleywood and natural stone. Barleywood is quite dark tbh, you probably don't want to paint the whole thing that colour.

TBH I preferred seagrass but DD intervened. Why in god's name I take orders from a two year old I don't know...

MrsTicklemouse · 06/08/2010 21:43

could it be because your DD is ridiculously sweet! :o

thank you muddleduck

thanks again ladies.

we now have a blue playhouse.

according to ds1 .... "it is much better than I thought it would be"

I'm pleased too. Went for 'forget-me-not' with 'country cream' trim. Very nice Smile
