Fitted units for small bathrooms

Would anyone like to share their thoughts on the above? I was quite anti fitted units because I'm not wild about the look of them, but now am convinced that it's the best way to keep the place clean and gain a little bit of storage.

The units would need to be the slimline kind (i.e. about 20cm depth). Anyone have some they love? Or hate? Did you buy some which fell apart and made you cross? Do white ones end up looking grubby? Should I overcome my resistance to fake wood? What about the worktop bit?

We'll only have room for a WC and basin unit so don't taunt me with visions of drawers full of colour-coded Penhaligon soap and shelves stacked with coordinating towels and nautical curios.

I'm a fan of built-in storage in bathrooms, although with a small room it can make it seem smaller.

I couldn't find anything I liked and ended up having something built out of MDF, painted white with an oiled oak worktop I found on the net. It needs some maintenance but looks good.

Re storage for towels, a friend of mine keeps her spares on a metal rack (a bit like the old luggage racks on trains) which is up above the door. It's ingenious.

I have a nice cupboard in the downstairs wc - very slimline with a rectangular basin on the top, that has made all the difference in there in keeping it tidy. It's white high gloss, and stays pretty clean.

If you are doing a full bathroom refurb, I really recommend using a local company with a designer (not just the plumber recommending stuff) - we used one, and she came up with fab ideas to make the most of the space. I thought we had a small bathroom, but it looks huge now (pics on profile)

Oh thanks for answering both much appreciated. I think I am convinced now. Custom building may be the way to go it's a very small area. I like the luggage rack idea!

CMOTdribbler, good point re asking for design advice. I like what they did with yours. We have been to a few places in the hope of getting this kind of service but they have all been rather lacklustre, so wil keep looking.

(CMOTdibbler, your bathroom is huge compared to mine! I can touch all 4 walls if I stand in middle and turn round.)

It is an 'inset' washbasin, with a slimline cupboard underneath. You can get them wider, where the porcelain just continues on to make a small work top either side. Very cleanable.

I also used to use a metal rack (from the ikea kitchen range) to keep towels on. As long as you fold them neatly they look good. We used one of those metal 's' shaped hooks hanging off it to hold a hand towel. Only adult could reach this though...
Am looking forward to removing green plastic suite, and mouldy carpet from our weeny bathroom.

Our bathroom sink is just like that one LinSpins, but the wider sort, and has mirror over with shelves. The porcelain worktop is fab to clean.
It is big - just the layout before was useless and made it feel cramped somehow - into the space that had a normal bath, tiny shower cubicle and a normal basin and loo, we now have a lovely big shower and the bath of my dreams (well, it doesn't have Daniel Craig as standard, but..) along with masses of storage

CMOT, where did you get yours from? The Pura one I linked to is pretty expensive...or maybe all sinks cost lots?

All the furniture was v pricey tbh - we originally wanted a run of it incorporating the loo, but reduced that due to costs

i have the same as poster above but with just 2doors,so easy to clean and streamline,i got mine new of ebay 2yrs ago for £110 with postage a bargain,should take a look on there.

Thanks all, this is very useful. I am nervous of brands I don't know, which is really limiting me at the moment, but am now exploring the links. The whole project seems like it's going to cost £££, even though the room is only the size of a king sized bed .
